How the gold rate in Dubai is worked out

Dubai gold rates start from the global spot price of gold, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. The dirham is fixed at 3.6725 to the dollar, so the ounce price converts to AED without guesswork. Divide by 31.1035 grams per ounce and you get the 24K price per gram. The 22K, 21K and 18K prices are the same figure scaled by purity (22/24, 21/24 and 18/24). Shops then add their own making charges and margin, which is why the price on a tag can differ a little from the rate on this page.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai?

Many buyers find it is. There is no income tax, the market is crowded with jewellers competing for the same customers, and making charges are often quoted as a flat amount per gram, so a jump in the gold price does not push them up with it. Visitors can usually claim back the 5% VAT on jewellery through the tourist refund scheme, subject to the retailer and the rules in force at the time.

The gold price in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and the rest of the UAE follows the same global benchmark and the same fixed dirham rate. Differences between emirates usually come down to each jeweller's making charges, not the base gold rate.

Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, it moves against the rupee, taka, peso and other currencies mostly when the dollar does. When the dollar strengthens, one dirham usually buys more of those currencies and a transfer is worth more at the other end. Exchange houses publish their own buy and sell rates, so always compare the final amount the receiver gets, not just the headline rate.
